From the 29th of November 2022 to the 25th of March 2023, 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS in Milan will present the exhibition ‘GIAN PAOLO BARBIERI: UNCONVENTIONAL’.

A new, 4 month-long-exhibition has just opened celebrating unexhibited and in some cases unseen works of the extraordinary, Italian fashion photographer Gian Paolo Barbieri entitled - Unconventional at the 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery in Milan. In this new exhibition, the artist who won the 2018 Lucie Award for Best International Fashion Photographer, amongst many others, will reveal some of his most Intimate and spontaneous shots of models and celebrities alike who reveal before his lens their more ironic and sensual side.

The exhibition showcases intimate, spontaneous shots of models and celebrities such as Eva Herzigova, Isa Stoppi and Donatella Versace counterbalanced with iconic photographs that Barbieri – one of the most brilliant interpreters of Made in Italy – created for some of the most famous ad campaigns for Italian and international fashion brands such as Versace, Ferrè, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino and Armani to name a few.

The show offers the public an unprecedented look at the lesser-known artistic production of the artist, full of references to the history of art and cinematic citations. Internationally recognised for his trademark black and white shots, his subjects appear almost unattainable in their sharp sophistication. Using colour, Barbieri recounts his own personal and ironic interpretation of fashion and feminine beauty: the women in the photographs on display free themselves from the more canonical poses of fashion photography instead becoming for the occasion spokeswomen of a new kind of unconventional elegance that reveals a more nonchalant, sensual side.

The exhibition opened alongside the release in cinemas in Italy from the 17th of October (and then internationally in the spring of 2023) of the first docufilm made on the work and life of Gian Paolo Barbieri "Man and beauty", already the winner of the Public Award at the Biografilm Festival 2022 in Bologna.

Barbieri for entire decades has been one of the most influential international photographers in the field of fashion and is well known for his iconic and timeless shots. His work has graced the pages and covers of global top-tier media. His work can be found around the world on display in some of the most prestigious museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in London, the Kunstforum in Vienna, the MAMM in Moscow, and the Erarta Contemporary Art Museum in St. Petersburg, the Musée du quai Branly in Paris and the Nicola Erni Collection to name a few.
