ART GoSee loves … The winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2023 : ‘Sea Beach (2020-2022)’ by Ismail Ferdous

28.11.2023 • The winner of the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2023 is photographer Ismail Ferdous, who was born in Bangladesh and lives in the United States. For his series ‘Sea Beach’, he received an award in the main category at the 43rd edition of the LOBA.

People at the beach : couples, children, large families, shell collectors as well as merchants, fishermen and lifeguards … The photographer portrayed them all for his series. And for each, Cox’s Bazar Beach is an unparalleled place, whether for recreation, to get away from it all, or even for work. Cox’s Bazar Beach is located at the Bay of Bengal near the city of the same name. At 120 kilometers in length, it is the longest natural sea beach in the world. In bright colors, the series presents the cultural diversity of Bangladesh in all its splendor.

The beach is a place of fond memories for the photographer. After all, he visited it regularly with his family in his early childhood and then later with his friends. The etiquette and behavior of beachgoers in the US, however, is fundamentally different from traditional beach life in Bangladesh....

ART An award capturing the many faces of modern Britain – ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ curated by the British Journal of Photography, published by Bluecoat Press

28.11.2023 • Diversity, empathy and authenticity are depicted in the 200 portraits shortlisted for ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ – curated and published by the British Journal of Photography. ‘Portrait of Britain’ captures “the quirky, the mundane, the here and now of the extraordinary everyday in which we live,” says Mick Moore, CEO and CD of the British Journal of Photography and a ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ juror.

The subjects, for the most part, are everyday people : those who are, perhaps, invisible in our communities, yet have nonetheless lived extraordinary live. Zuzu Valla likes to photograph models with disabilities. Her eye-catching portrait ‘Lauren’ is part of a series intended to promote diversity through photography.

ART ‘PARADISE, PERFORMANCE, REPLICA. SLOVENIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC ART’ – three contemporary artists from Slovenia on display at Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (through 07 January, 24)

24.11.2023 • With multiple exhibitions each year, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt (FFF) presents the entire breadth and depth of the versatile medium and the broad spectrum of artistic positions. Celebrating Slovenia’s appearance as guest of honor of the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair, the exhibition PARADISE, PERFORMANCE, REPLICA. SLOVENIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC ART is on display from 07 Oct – 07 Jan, 2024).

The playful use of repetition, staged roles, how we view our surroundings: As examples of contemporary photography from Slovenia, the FFF is showcasing three artists who are testing the limits of photography through experimentation.

In her series ‘Birds of Paradise’, Vanja Bućan (*1973, Nova Gorica) challenges traditional roles of women, historically depicted as housekeepers, with staged surrealistic compositions. Motherhood, cutting food, spilled milk, a life revolving around the stove and table, exhaustion, mending things… beauty and decoration are the hallmarks of daily domestic chores depicted in her work.

ART GoSee Book Tip : ‘American Bedroom - Reflections on the Nature of Life’ - photographic insights into American bedrooms by Barbara Peacock – as a photo book at Kehrer Publishing

21.11.2023 • ‘American Bedroom’ is a poetic photographic journey, viewing Americans in their most intimate dwelling: the bedroom. The nature of the project: unguarded portraits of individuals, couples, and families that reveal the depth of their unique character, truth, and spirit.

The photos are full of subtle details which invite us to contemplate the idiosyncrasies of each enigmatic life – paired with quotes from each subject. My life has been dramatic, and it could not have been better, says, for instance, 97-year-old Doris from Overland Park, Kansas.

Barbara Peacock is a photographer and director living in Portland, Maine. Since the time ‘American Bedroom’ was started in 2016, she has won the Getty Editorial Grant, the Women Photograph/Getty Grant, three LensCulture Awards, four Top 50 Critical Mass Awards, and was named one of the Top 100 Photographers in America in 2020.

ART SVEN JACOBSEN presents a snapshot of his ‘Color Studies’, the new art project by the photographer and director on GoSee

20.11.2023 • Photographer and Director SVEN JACOBSEN (*1969) is known for capturing the authenticity of his motifs through timeless snapshots. His photography is marked by a deep appreciation of simplicity.

Here on GoSee, SVEN JACOBSEN presents his new project, on which he has been working for quite some time. They’re photos of his which he has treated with acrylic paint. “The effect of the images, in my opinion, goes from real to surreal upon applying the paints in a mélange of reality and fantasy – spawning new narratives and fantasies. At times, creating the impression that the colors indeed existed in real life,” Sven tells GoSee. The images are available for purchase and in any format.

Sven finds joy in simple things as well as in the beauty of the moment. Emotionality, lightness and authenticity are first and foremost throughout Sven’s creative process as he strives to uncover the essence of his topics, foresee imperfections, and convey a sense of truth.
