The novel 'Herabsehen auf die DDR' (=Looking Down on the GDR) by Yannick Labbé will be published on October 3, 2025, by Leipzig-based Mosses Schroeter Verlag. The book cover is by Caroline HEINECKE c/o JULIA WALDMANN.
The plot: 1989. A bureaucrat. A pair of binoculars. And a mission to save the Federal Republic of Germany. Uwe Dertenkötter is no hero. He is an auditor. He is dedicated to it, heart, soul, and pencil. But when the Chancellor himself sends him on a journey along the inner-German border, his orderly life is thrown into disarray.
The task: Using high-performance binoculars, Dertenkötter is tasked with investigating where investments in the territory of the GDR would be worthwhile. What did people used to eat on trains? And how has the experience of travel shifted between the romance of the dining car and the plastic trays of the TGV? The Food-Express exhibition at Paris’s Ground Control explores exactly these questions – taking visitors on a visual and atmospheric journey through 140 years of railway cuisine.
On display are historical menus, porcelain bearing railway logos, vintage advertisements, and photographs that document not only the evolution of onboard meals but also the changing culture of train travel itself. From the elegance of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits to the modern-day bistro carriage, Food-Express offers insights into what was served – and what it meant.
The exhibition is part of this summer’s season at Ground Control, the vibrant cultural hub next to Gare de Lyon where food, art, music and community come together. Admission is free – and whether you’re in the mood for a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of rail or just looking for a new perspective on your next train-station sandwich, it’s well worth a visit.
