'Loud. Strong. Equal.' – Collien Ulmen-Fernandes guides viewers through the ZDF series 'The Time of Women', with portraits delivered by Maximilian KÖNIG c/o DOUBLE T Photographers

Children, kitchen, and church. How close and just how far away is the image we had of women in the 1950s to how we see them in 2022? Collien Ulmen-Fernandes gets to the bottom of precisely this question with an entertaining and historical approach.

ZDF : “In the 1950s, most women were busy taking care of the children, caring for relatives or with their housekeeping chores. In West Germany, they were not permitted to have their own bank account, and could only pursue a professional career if their husband allowed it. The General Equal Treatment Act from 1958, however, did not change the situation much. Although it allowed women to manage their own financial affairs and take on employment even against the will of their spouse, they were only permitted to do so as long as they did not neglect their household and family. By law, the ‘family duties’ of the wife have the highest priority.”

Maximilian KÖNIG c/o DOUBLE T Photographers shot presenter Collien Ulmen-Fernandes on a set full of humor. Production for German broadcaster ZDF was in the hands of Eco Media.

Born in 1981, Collien Ulmen-Fernandes is a German TV presenter, actress and author. She is the daughter of an Indian father of Portuguese heritage, and her mother’s side of the family comes from Hungary. Collien lives in Potsdam and has been married to actor Christian Ulmen since 2011. In April 2012, they became the parents of a daughter.
