Albrecht von Dewitz founded the Vaude company to sell equipment for mountaineering and produce its own backpacks. The company name is derived from the founder’s last initials: v and D.
Family-owned 100 percent, the company is headquartered in Tettnang-Obereisenbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It was founded in 1974 by Albrecht von Dewitz, who passed the business down to his daughter, Antje von Dewitz, in 2009.
As a new division of the company, the VAUDE Academy for Sustainable Business was founded in 2020. Its purpose is to inform and coach companies and organizations on how to adapt more sustainable business practices. The division was supported in the beginning with funding from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) and is operated as a social business according to Vaude.
