Kai Uwe Gundlach photographed the new motif for the award-winning FAZ campaign, which was produced by SVEN LAABS. To do so, Christoph Grainger-Herr, CEO of watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen, sat on top of the obelisk of the nearly nine meter high sundial of the Halde Hohewald in the Ruhr region and let them photograph him there. Hiding his face – true to the campaign idea – behind the Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung.
“The shadow cast by the sundial shows the local time as well as the date according to the position of the sun. This way of determining time follows in the footsteps of pre-Christian models, making it timeless itself. With an area of around 3000 m2, it is the largest watch Grainger-Herr has ever experienced,” says F.A.Z. The campaign ‘There’s always a smart mind behind it’ has dealt with social topics and events photographically since 1995.
The entrepreneur was in charge of the architectural design of the production facility of IWC Schaffhausen and moved to management of the company at a later time. In 2017, he became the Managing Director of the traditional Swiss brand.
From the client, Yamina Grossmann (F.A.Z.) supported the shoot, and from IWC Schaffhausen, Maurice Moitroux, Caroline Spoerry, Tom Scheuring and Jeannine Tanner were part of it. Creative Director was Jörg Waschescio from Scholz & Friends.
