An award capturing the many faces of modern Britain – ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ curated by the British Journal of Photography, published by Bluecoat Press
Diversity, empathy and authenticity are depicted in the 200 portraits shortlisted for ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ – curated and published by the British Journal of Photography. ‘Portrait of Britain’ captures “the quirky, the mundane, the here and now of the extraordinary everyday in which we live,” says Mick Moore, CEO and CD of the British Journal of Photography and a ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’ juror.
The subjects, for the most part, are everyday people : those who are, perhaps, invisible in our communities, yet have nonetheless lived extraordinary live. Zuzu Valla likes to photograph models with disabilities. Her eye-catching portrait ‘Lauren’ is part of a series intended to promote diversity through photography.
Zuzu Valla on her project : “Our photo shoot with disabled models was not just about capturing aesthetically pleasing images; it was about capturing hearts, minds and narratives. By portraying the strength, resilience, and unique stories of disabled models, we took a step towards redefining societal norms and promoting a world where every individual feels seen, valued and empowered. Through these images, we hope to inspire change, create conversations and foster a more inclusive and accepting society for all.”
There are more familiar faces among the portraits, too – for instance, an improvised shot of Sir Ian McKellen striking a camp pose for Frederic Aranda just before taking the stage as Mother Goose at the Duke of York Theatre in London’s West End. Don Letts, Lily Allen and Ian Wright are just a few of the other sportspeople, musicians, actors and personalities who feature among the 200 shortlisted portraits in the accompanying book ‘Portrait of Britain Volume 6’, published by Bluecoat Press.
‘Portrait of Britain’ was launched in the tumultuous months ahead of the June 2016 Brexit vote with a callout for images that reflected the country’s unique heritage and diversity. The British Journal of Photography invited submissions from both amateurs and professionals in an initiative that sought to reveal “the many faces of Britain,” devoid of the divisive political rhetoric of the day.
Volume 6 is the first made in collaboration with Bluecoat Press, the photo book publishing house which, in recent years, has focused solely on the work of UK-based photographers, including that of Tish Murtha, Jim Mortram, Markéta Luskačová and many others.
