Since ancient times, Vanitas has symbolized transience, vanity, and futility – a theme that is more relevant today than ever before. In a world shaped by the fast pace and digital influence of social media, the fragility of life has become increasingly apparent. While social networks seem to promise a kind of immortality, contemporary art addresses this contradiction through methods like Trompe-l’oeil or conceptual art. These works highlight the boundaries of human hubris. Crises such as climate change, the pandemic, and political upheavals heighten our awareness of mortality, making the concept of Vanitas as a modern still life or performative art even more pertinent.
The pop-up exhibition VANITAS VOL II brings these ideas to life in an exciting way. From February 21 to March 3, 2025, the three art dealers BERNHEIMER CONTEMPORARY, VIOVENTI ART, and MARCO PESARESE FINE ART will showcase works from 12 different artists at the GaGalerie in Munich's Schlachthofviertel. Among the featured works is art by Jan Kuck, whose conceptual work combines philosophical depth with visual clarity. Kuck’s installations, such as the impressive light piece The Burning River on the Isar in Munich, provoke thought on existential questions. With his neon signs and interactive projects, he transforms urban spaces into places of reflection and dialogue.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 6:00 PM, with the gallery owners and several artists in attendance!
