BILDHALLE ZURICH kicks off the season with CIG HARVEY ‘Eat Flowers’ and a reading by the photographer from her successful book ‘Blue Violet’ (Phaidon)

For the season opening in Zurich, the gallery BILDHALLE is presenting CIG HARVEY’s ‘Eat Flowers’. The vernissage is on 1 September, and Cig Harvey will read from her book ‘Blue Violet’. “‘Blue Violet’ is a celebration of the natural world and the senses. ‘Blue Violet’ is a vibrant meditation on the procession of seasons, sensory abundance, and the magic in everyday life,” says Cig Harvey, an artist and author born in the UK residing in Maine (USA), who captures the magic of everyday life with her color photographs and tells stories deeply rooted in nature and family relationships.

For centuries, art has embraced the use of bright colors and floriography on canvases as a form of encoded symbolism. Cig Harvey extends this storied tradition of painting through her photography, and uses floral elements as a symbol for mortality and reincarnation. But she pushes the language of flowers well beyond art history: Growing roses is an act of courage, she has said. Because: Could the mere presence of beauty, simply by existing, unite us? Standing before Harvey’s flowers, can we conjure a connection through it, to one other – however fleeting – across this often so deep divide? For Cig Harvey, photography is a way to reclaim ownership and agency,” says Mirjam Cavegn from the gallery Bildhalle.

Eat Flowers! That sounds like zeitgeist. After a bit of esotericism on top of our irony. But who can escape the attraction of flowers? This multitude of shapes, colors, scents and haptic. This symbolism, this use of metaphors. Light, time, life, hope, beauty, sex and love. It makes you want to take it all home with you. At least as a seed, a shoot, a cut flower … or capture it in a photograph,” says Daniel Blochwitz, renowned curator for photography in Zurich.

Cig Harvey (*1973) is represented by Robert Mann Gallery in New York and Jackson Fine Art in Atlanta. She is represented by the Bildhalle in the future for the European market. She has exhibited worldwide including at Paris Photo, Art Miami, Photo London and AIPAD (New York) for the past fifteen years. She has already published four books which all sold out in just a short time. Her latest book ‘Blue Violet’ (Monacelli / Phaidon, 2021) was published in a second edition after one year.

Cig Harvey’s photographs and books are part of the permanent collections of many museums across the world including The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the New York Public Library, Yale University, the Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, Texas), the Farnsworth Art Museum (Maine, USA), and the International Museum of Photography and Film at the George Eastman House (New York).
