Marco Brambilla’s ‘Double Feature’ exhibition at FOTOGRAFISKA BERLIN presents a dazzling spectacle all about the Hollywood cult around glamour and fame. In his two maximalist video collages, the artist re-contextualizes the multifaceted layers of popular imagery to illustrate the empty promises of the Dream Factory. His works both celebrate and parody the excesses of the entertainment industry as well as our obsession with it. Taken from his 'Megaplex’ series, these works challenge us to reconsider old ideals and conventions.
‘Double Feature’ showcases Brambilla’s first and last work in his ‘Megaplex’ series: ‘Civilization’ (2008) and ‘Heaven’s Gate’ (2022). ‘Civilization’ takes viewers on a psychedelic journey from hell to heaven, using a tableau of collaged film loops lifted from iconic moments of cinematic history. Hyperrealistic clouds, meadows and burning cityscapes form a backdrop to humanity’s frenzied production and consumption of media.
‘Heaven’s Gate’ deals with the seven levels of purgatory, each depicted as a fantastical landscape of looping video footage from Hollywood’s Golden Age, with references to topics including gaming, news, cinema, and reality TV.
Using cutting-edge technology such as AI and computer graphics, Marco Brambilla brings his grand artistic vision to life. He transports us to a place where reality and fiction are blended – shining a light on the fictions we are consumed by, and the realities we may wish to escape.
The opening was on 10 October 2024, and the exhibition will be on display through 2 March 2025. It has been organized by Johan Vikner (Global Director Exhibitions of Fotografiska) and Thomas Schäfer (Exhibition Manager of Fotografiska Berlin).
