Gerhard Richter : painted photographs in Morsbroich - abstract pictures in Cologne, 4900 colours in London

The Museum Morsbroich presents “Gerhard Richter. Übermalte Fotografien“ (painted photographs), an almost unknown series of work by the internationally renowned artist.

Gerhard Richter discovered the technique of painting on photographs by chance: whilst using photographs and newspaper clippings as a guideline for his oil paintings, he repeatedly dripped oil paints onto the photos by mistake. The resulting colour effects and the juxtaposition of the different media of photography and painting inspired him to intensely experiment with this unusual combination.

From 18 October 2008 until 1 February 2009, the Museum Ludwig, Cologne, will be hosting the exhibition “Gerhard Richter. Abstrakte Bilder“ (abstract pictures). The show will comprise 40 paintings from between 1986 and 2006, the "Cage", 2006 and "Wald" 2005 series are highlights, the second of which has not yet been shown in Europe.

The paintings have an overwhelming sense of poetry. Richter comments on his work “chance, arbitrariness, whim and destruction brings about a particular kind of painting, it is never a predetermined painting”. Painting for Richter is “the creation of an analogy to the ineffable and inconceivable, which in this way will assume form and become freely available”.

The exhibition is accompanied by a book, published by Hatje Cantz Verlag ( 160 pages, approx. 80 colour illustrations).

And should you not be able to make it to Germany in time, you could always go and marvel at his 4900 Colours: Version II exhibition which is currently on, until 23 November 2008, at the Serpentine Gallery, London. www.serpentinegallery.org.
