GoSee Book recommendation : Stephen Shames – 'A Lifetime in Photography' (Kehrer Publishing) – A Powerful Exploration of Social Issues Through the Lens of a Renowned Photojournalist

"This book contains photographs from my five decade journey across five continents. I care about this book since it is the culmination of my journey, something for future generations..." Stephen Shames is an American photojournalist with more than five decades of experience. In his award-winning photo essays, he highlights social issues such as child poverty and racism. Throughout his career, he has authored numerous books, including Power to the People: The World of the Black Panthers and Outside the Dream: Child Poverty in America. Now, Kehrer Verlag is releasing a comprehensive book featuring many unpublished photos. Although Shames has photographed a wide range of subjects, including presidents and individuals from countless cultures, there is a thread that unites his work: his images of children and families focus on what both divides and connects us—violence and abuse, but also love, hope, and transcendence. The photos come from his deepest core.

"The great thing about being a photojournalist is your camera is a ticket to go anywhere. Whether photographing the mundane or the dangerous, I try to convey pure emotion in my pictures, to get behind the scenes, to find a different angle so my pictures reveal what is beneath the surface. Having a distinct vision allows a photographer to be more poetic. While my work fits into the documentary tradition, it is also about the edges of experience, where things are more ambiguous and nonrational: the inner moments, where public events meet our private fears and hopes. This, in my opinion, is where the action is, the place of art." Stephen Shames

Stephen Shames (born 1947 in Cambridge, Massachusetts) is an American photojournalist who has been raising awareness about social issues for nearly 60 years, focusing particularly on child poverty and racism. In 2010, he was honored as a Purpose Prize Fellow by Encore.org, primarily for his work supporting AIDS orphans and former child soldiers in Africa. His works have been published and exhibited internationally and are part of the collections of prestigious institutions such as the MoMA in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the George Eastman Museum, the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
