Angela Santana presents, in her second exhibition at Saatchi Yates, works that redefine the representation of the female body in contemporary art. She intensively engages with and questions traditional portrayals of the female form, addressing themes such as identity, transformation, and the ways the body is depicted in our digital world.
Santana turns her attention to the internet, embracing it as her modern muse. She challenges classical and conservative depictions, breaking away from traditional painting techniques. Instead, she deconstructs digital media into multiple layers, reimagining them through her large-scale oil paintings. Santana focuses on the vast number of images circulating online, many of which depict the female body through a male-dominated lens. She radically reinterprets these outdated portrayals from her own perspective, showcasing a new way of representing and perceiving the female body—from a female lens and within today’s digital age.
Angela Santana (born 1986) grew up near Zurich and worked as a graphic designer and art director in Paris and London before leaving her job to paint full-time. She now lives in New York. Her work confronts the representation of the female body, questioning conventional, classical depictions of the female nude. She presents intimate images of the female form to challenge the male gaze, reimagining her subjects in a protective, reinterpreted way. Santana explores the intersection between the rapid consumption of online imagery and the representation of women, rejecting the male-dominated, classical portrayal of the female body.
Saatchi Yates was founded in 2020 by 26-year-old Phoebe Saatchi and her husband Arthur Yates, with the aim of creating a commercial gallery in London that would offer a platform for emerging artists. Phoebe Saatchi is the daughter of renowned collector Charles Saatchi, who, in 1997, brought the Young British Artists to the forefront with the "Sensation" exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, revolutionizing the British art scene. Since its opening in 2020, Saatchi Yates has established itself as a gallery that not only supports rising artists but also presents significant contemporary art from leading private collections. “The challenge is always: how do you make a gallery where people feel like they are welcome if they don’t have a chequebook and aren’t part of this insider world that is ‘the art market’,” says Phoebe in an interview with Vogue.
