The online exhibition ‘Imaging Blackness’ brings together a fine selection of Black photographers, who deal with the image of Black people in front of and behind the camera in different ways. Waiting to be discovered are works by Thandiwe Muriu, Bevan Agyemang, Adrian Octavius Walker, Delphine Diallo, Aicha Fall Nadaud, Djibril Drame, Yannis Davy Guibinca, Joel Palmer, John Baloyi, Lakin Ogunbanwo, Maganga Mwagogo, Kenny Germé, Marcus Maddox, Ngadi Smart, Stephen Tayo, and Reece T Williams. Profits go to English charity organization Black Minds Matter.

Renowned curator, art critic and art historian Aindrea Emelife from London tells us about the selection : “This exhibition is an exploration of how Black contemporary photographers are exploring Blackness, and its many facets through photography. It is a bold coming together of global talent that reclaims the agency of the Black figure and of Blackness through their work. It is utopian, critical and celebratory at once. It is history, contemporary, resistance and reclamation delivered through the hands of new talents that dare to dream because there is no other way. There was a time when photography documented our oppression; black bodies captured through the shutter clicks of white hands. With ‘Imaging Blackness’, through the work of these photographers, I look to present personal aspects of Blackness to prove that we are not a monolith. It is a battle cry coated in bold imagery. I hope to offer space for connection and new energies, to dance and dream.”

On the website of ‘Imaging Blackness’, we read : Black photography by Black photographers has fundamentally been overlooked by the art world and the media; unwilling, or unable, to grasp its power and essence. But this has not deterred. It has instead inspired proactivity. African-Americans’ engagement with photography in the 19th century kickstarted a tradition for Black photographers’ use of photography today to promote social change and challenge the representation of Blackness historically with powerful imagery which redefines the beauty, resilience, and multiplicity of the Black experience.

When African-Americans were reconciling the painful aftermath of enslavement, forging a new future and fighting for equal rights, they embraced photography during these times, as it was a means for them to reshape the narrative. Photography is particularly important when we consider that whoever wields the camera is in control and is given the chance to shape not only their own image but that of their community. With the camera, Black photographers and the Black subject could continuously challenge racist stereotypes and portray Black communities as they are and as they aspire to be.

Curator Aindrea Emelife is an acclaimed art critic and art historian from London. Starting at The Courtauld Institute of Art, where she received a BA in History of Art, she quickly went on to become a groundbreaking new voice in the art world, delivering talks and lectures at UNESCO, The Times, the Courtauld Institute of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, among others.
