The Paris Photo team is made up of professionals and experts in photography, the art world, and related disciplines, all driven by a common ambition: to make each edition the international meeting place for the photography market. Key members of the team include Director Florence Bourgeois and Artistic Director Anna Planas. We have their greeting message for PARIS PHOTO 2024 for you here on GoSee.News:
“For its 27th edition, Paris Photo is returning to the Grand Palais with a rich program that reflects the vitality and diversity of the photography world. We wanted to create a fair that celebrates renowned photographers while fostering a dialogue between historic works and contemporary practices.
Among the highlights is the new Voices section, curated by three international curators: Elena Navarro, Azu Nwagbogu, and Sonia Voss, which aims to offer fresh perspectives on the medium.
The year 2024 marks the centenary of Surrealism, a movement that profoundly transformed both art and photography. To celebrate this occasion, we have given American director and screenwriter Jim Jarmusch carte blanche to create a new display.
A further centenary celebrated this year is that of Robert Frank. Pace is devoting a solo show to him at the opening of Paris Photo. Thomas Zander is exploring his influence on future generations, while Steidl is spotlighting Robert Frank’s books. Other major figures include Hiroshi Sugimoto at Fraenkel Gallery and Charlotte Perriand at the gallery M77 in Milan, as well as Richard Avedon and Tyler Mitchell at Gagosian.
The Prismes section provides an immersive experience amid monumental works, featuring projects such as August Sander’s series ‘People from the Twentieth Century’, presented for the first time in Europe, along with Anton Kusters’ installation focusing on memory and the concentration camps. These works challenge our understanding of history and the archive.
This edition of the fair also emphasizes human connections, featuring works that explore themes of friendship, intimacy, and perception of the body. The self-portraits of Boris Mikhaïlov and Marie Katayama, presented by Suzanne Tarasieve, alongside the archive of Tee A. Corinne, documenting lesbian communities of the 1970s, invite viewers to reflect on identity and collective memory. Carmen Winant and Bérangère Fromont explore these same themes through collages and photographs that blend the personal with the universal.
The 2024 edition is distinguished by its experimental approach, featuring artists who push the boundaries of image-making and explore new techniques, such as Caroline Corbasson at Dilecta, Miguel Angel Tornero at Juan Silio Gallery, and Alina Frieske in the Digital section at Fabienne Levy.
We are also presenting a new exhibition of Lithuanian photography, drawn from the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Centre Pompidou, and the Lithuanian Photographers Association. Ranging from iconic photographers of the Soviet era to more recent works, ‘The Forms of Things’, ‘The Forms of Skulls’, and ‘The Forms of Love’ resonate strongly with contemporary issues.
We look forward to seeing you at the Grand Palais from 7 to 10 November 2024 and discovering this new edition together.”
