GOSEE FEATURES CONTEMPORARY ART & RENOWNED ARTISTS

ART GOSEE ART presents :  ‘Drummies’ by photographer Alice Mann, a book published at Gost

20.03.2022 • This long-term project by Alice Mann, born in South Africa and home away from home in London, explores the unique sport of drum majorettes. The images by the photographer depict the magnificently colored subculture surrounding all-female teams of drum majorettes affectionately known as ‘drummies.’

We quote : “The sport has a long history in South Africa, but in recent years, participation in the sport has dropped dramatically. However, in many marginalized communities, it is still taken seriously and considered a highly competitive sport. For those involved, being a ‘drummie’ is a privilege – an achievement, indicative of success, hard work and commitment both on and off the field. Participants often gain a sense of belonging and self-worth in communities where opportunities for young women can be severely limited.”

Alice Mann on her project : “This is part of my ongoing work, exploring notions of femininity and empowerment in modern society. With my continued investigation into this subculture, I hope that these images can communicate the pride and confidence these girls have...

ART GOSEE Book TIP : ‘Material’ – the first monograph by British photographer Jet Swan is a collection of powerful portraits of strangers, appearing at Loose Joints Publishing

10.03.2022 • “Often the most seemingly ordinary people are the most fascinating,” – British photographer JET SWAN tells us. Jet Swan (born 1990) grew up in North Yorkshire. Her work is somewhere between documentation and classic portrait photography. Over a period of three years, she photographed people in temporary studio spaces across the UK – including a shopping center in Scarborough, Yorkshire, and a community hall in Ramsgate, Kent, where Swan lives and works. Created during these chance encounters with complete strangers were traditional studio portraits and detail photos which she presents us in ‘MATERIAL’.

“‘Material’ is a meeting of several very personal bodies of work. For me, it feels like a real embodiment of themes I wasn’t able to articulate in words or even in a sequence of images before … Those tactile, sometimes dangerous scenes feel like something I’ve dreamt about or something I remember but can’t describe,” says Jet Swan

Loose Joints Publishing on the book (160pp, 190 × 242 mm, 100 photos) : “A striking new photographic voice engages with street portraiture to create dark,...

ART GOSEE TIP : ‘The Hard Core of Beauty’ – early portraits and serial works by Ingar Krauss at Galerie Springer Berlin

02.03.2022 • For the first time, Galerie Springer Berlin presents artist and photographer Ingar Krauss with an exhibition from 1 March through 14 May, 2022. On display are early portraits, still lifes and serial works. At the heart of his work is portraiture. He became known with pictures of children and adolescents whom he portrayed during their development in melancholic-meditative images. To arrange his still lifes, he constructs stage-like boxes within which he captures natural light. The title of the exhibition, ‘The Hard Core of Beauty’, is named after a poem by William Carlos Williams.

“Krauss works solely with analogue equipment and preferably in black and white, i.e. in the darkroom. No computer is used in his image production, and whenever he processes images, he does so by hand, with a paintbrush and varnish. His pictures reflect a realism that is magical in a natural way: as a perception of the poetic, the surreal and sometimes sinister in everyday life.

Ingar Krauss was born in East Berlin in 1965. He lives and works in Berlin and Oderbruch. He has participated in numerous...
