Audrey Tautou is back on stage! Cover story by ESTHER HAASE for the new MADAME FIGARO

ESTHER HAASE met up once more with French film stars for MADAME FIGARO. This time, the celebrity photographer had simpatico actress Audrey Tautou in front of her lens – whom many will fondly remember from her lead role in ‘Amélie’ and, above all, from her legendary appearance in the role of Coco Chanel.

Despite her enormous success in French cinema, Audrey Tautou decided to slow things down a bit a decade ago. Five years later, after playing supporting roles in ‘En liberté !’, which was translated to ‘The Trouble with You’, or ‘Santa & Cie.’, the iconic actress decided not to film at all anymore. Making movies had become too time-consuming for the curious actress who dreams of exploring other disciplines and enjoys her daily life with her daughter, whom she adopted in 2018. Which made it all the more surprising to discover her on stage again at the beginning of the year.

Audrey Tautou is back on stage with a literary and musical performance. The piece, based on the novel ‘Charlotte’ by David Foenkinos, is about the life of Jewish-German painter Charlotte Salomon, who was deported in 1943 and killed in Auschwitz.

“It was also the portrait of an artist, shining light on her incredible work that swayed my decision to return to the stage,” the actress, who has always had a veritable passion for painting, tells MADAME FIGARO. As a teenager in her hometown of Montluçon, Audrey Tautou, who is meanwhile aged 47, dreamed of becoming a student of the fine arts.

She reveals what else she has been up to over the past years in a MADAME FIGARO interview : “I wrote a children’s book, which I also illustrated, but it is much more work than I had imagined … I am also working on a photo book. An extension of the ‘Superfacial’ exhibition I presented in Arles, enriched with texts. When I started working freelance, I noticed how difficult it is to complete projects successfully! I need deadlines, but I don’t believe that publishing companies would dare to give me a time limit. I’m working on a screenplay in parallel which I would like to direct. But at the speed I’m going, we’ll probably talk about it again ten years from now …”

‘Charlotte’, directed by Jérémie Lippmann, will run from 19 to 25 January, 2024, at La Seine Musicale in Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine).
