Grayson LAUFFENBURGER c/o HAUSER FOTOGRAFEN photographed actor Sam Riley above the rooftops of Danzig.
Sam Riley is now making a fascinating appearance in the role of homosexual star choreographer John Cranko (1927-1973), who shaped ballet in Germany unlike anyone else – thanks to the impact he made through his groundbreaking work in Stuttgart. John Cranko went to Stuttgart in 1960 for a guest performance at the Stuttgart Ballet and was soon appointed ballet director. With Sam Riley playing the lead role in ‘Cranko’, Director Joachim A. Lang tells the story of John Cranko’s rise from pop star of the ballet world to its very top.
Cranko’s choreographies were instrumental in the emergence of what is celebrated as the ‘Stuttgart Ballet Miracle’. And it all started in 1969 with a guest performance at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Cranko’s gift for nuanced storytelling, his clear dramatic structure and exquisite mastery of the pas de deux won the hearts of New York audiences.
In 1971, he founded a ballet boarding school. Today, the John Cranko School is a ballet school of the Stuttgart State Theater as well as a vocational school and State Ballet Academy.
The film will debut on 20 September 2024 at the Stuttgart State Opera, and the official box office start is on 3 October 2024 across Germany.
