Cholitas - Tobias SCHULT c/o EMEIS DEUBEL portrays the indigenous power women of Bolivia

Tobias SCHULT c/o EMEIS DEUBEL traveled to Bolivia to portray various groups of indigenous women, the "Cholitas." He spent time with the Cholitas Luchadoras, a group of wrestlers, the Cholitas Patinadoras, a group of female ice skaters, and the Cholitas Escaladoras (rock climbers).

Indigenous women in Bolivia and Peru are called chola or (diminished) cholita. They dress according to a fashion imported to South America from Europe in the 1920s, wearing hats originally designed for men.

The Cholita Climbers of Bolivia, or Las Cholitas Escaladoras Bolivianas, are a group of indigenous Aymara mountaineers who climb peaks in Latin America. They do not wear modern mountaineering clothing, preferring their traditional dress, including polleras, colorful, wide pleated skirts with numerous petticoats. They wear helmets and boots and use crampons, ice axes, and ropes, but carry their equipment in traditional shawls on their backs.

The group was founded in 2015 by indigenous women, including Cecilia Llusco Alaña. The women are part of a close-knit community that works and lives in the mountains. Their most notable expedition took place on January 23, 2019, when they became the first Aymara women to climb Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas.

Cholitas are an important cultural symbol in Bolivia and represent the country's indigenous roots. They have gained greater visibility and recognition in recent years, including in fashion and public life, and have become a symbol of pride and self-confidence.
