For PHOTO LONDON from 9-12 September, THE RANKIN GROUP is opening its Kentish Town Studio in London: “In celebration of PHOTO LONDON, we’re opening up our Kentish Town Studio to the public for a weekend that explores the intersection between art, creativity and mental health. With an exhibition of new work, a book signing and a live talk, this OPEN STUDIO is bringing well-being to the forefront of the contemporary art world.”
RANKIN is presenting his work ‘Embrace’ there, consisting of calm, almost meditative floral stills which the photographer shot in his studio during the time of isolation caused by the pandemic. But also photos which show him photographing. A few weeks ago, the book of the same name was published, the proceeds of which will go to The Care Workers' Charity.
“Self-isolation gave me an opportunity to really focus on this work as I’d imagined it. What’s interesting about these images is how much they reflect my personal state of mind, while also representing my approach to the world. When I was taking each picture, I realized right from the beginning that I was treating them like a portrait. Whether they were single flowers or groups, I couldn’t help but give them characters, search for their personalities and try to bring them to life,” says RANKIN.
For RANKIN, who normally expresses himself through fashion portraits, photographing flowers means going in a new direction. He was “treating them like a portrait... couldn’t help to give them characters... and tried to bring them to life.” This helped him to create a work which equally captures the loneliness and the sadness which, for many people, in addition to a feeling of hope, had been an essential part of the pandemic, and is underscored by the title ‘Embrace’.
Also on display is his new work ‘Exploding World’. Each frame becomes an expression of Rankin’s frustration during the time of isolation and the resulting extremely expressive creativity: “For years now, I’ve been obsessed with the perfection of a dandelion seed head. Seen as weeds, they grow absolutely everywhere, especially in the city. And during a time of great stress, there was comfort in them. Especially since blowing them into the wind was associated with making a wish when I was growing up.”
