The Ernst von Siemens Music Prize 2025 - considered the "Nobel Prize of Music" - will be awarded to the British-German conductor Sir Simon Rattle. The 2025 composition prizes, each worth 35,000 euros, will go to the Iranian-Canadian composer Ashkan Behzadi, Bastien David from France and the Norwegian Kristine Tjøgersen.
He is one of the most important and influential conductors of our time, according to the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation's award committee. Rattle stands for outstanding interpretations, openness to different musical genres and an incomparable commitment to communication work. Rattle would like to use the prize money of 250,000 euros to build up an original sound ensemble for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.
The award ceremony itself will take place on May 17, 2025 in the Hercules Hall of the Munich Residenz. The laudation for Sir Simon Rattle will be given by the British-Jamaican opera singer Sir Willard White. Members of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra will play Arnold Schönberg's 1st Chamber Symphony under the direction of the prizewinner.
Since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, Sir Simon Rattle has been the chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra. Simon Rattle gained his international reputation during his time with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (1980-1998), which he led to world fame.
The Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation was founded by the industrialist Ernst von Siemens in 1972 and based in Zug (Switzerland). The founder Ernst von Siemens contributed shares to the foundation's assets, the dividends from which flow into the foundation. The foundation is therefore dependent on the business results of Siemens AG
Ernst Albrecht von Siemens (* April 9, 1903 in Kingston upon Hull, Great Britain; † December 31, 1990 in Starnberg) was a German industrialist, the only son of Carl Friedrich von Siemens and the youngest grandson of the inventor and company founder Werner von Siemens.
