Photographer and Creative Director ARNAUD ELE c/o COSMOPOLA teamed up with AD Laura KNOOPS c/o COSMOPOLA to realize the editorial ‘Mental Filters’ for VOGUE PORTUGAL including the marvelous fashion film ‘Behind Closed Doors’.

“How do we see ourselves? How do we see ourselves through the eyes of someone else? Physically, a mirror bounces light off of anything in front of it. However, psychologically, when we look into a mirror, we are confronted with more than just our physical appearance. Our emotions and psychological state can alter what we see and create a different view.

… is there anyone who sees me in the same way as I do? When I confront my reflection, what is returned to me is more than the physical features that are drawn on it. It is my spirit, my emotions, my temper. And after confronting him – my reflection – the spirit changes, my emotions change, my temperament changes. As a mental filter, the psychological influence on what the eyes see, or rather, perceive, of what is returned to us in the mirror, directly interferes with our perception of the self, with my perception of my reflection, of my world.”

Born in Cameroon, raised in France and Switzerland, Arnaud Ele studied filmmaking at the Geneva Film School (Switzerland). Following a trip back to Cameroon in 2015, where he spent the first five years of his life, he started to explore the notions of territory, identities, within their codes and associated representations.

Arnaud Ele became known not only for his fashion photography but also for his documentary series in Switzerland and Cameroon as well as his numerous video collaborations with artists, singers and dancers from the art scene in Switzerland.

Wherever he goes, he focuses on the concept of intimacy. Wondering about the ways of inhabiting the territories and their uses as well as the way in which nature and human occupation intertwine, he has always endeavored to push back the limits of the documentary. Under the innocuous appearance of its scenes, he reveals hidden stories. He defends the view of the human eye as a method of recording and intimacy as a mode of description. His photographic work is the continuity of his training as a filmmaker: the intuitive scenario of the image, the exploration of new narrative forms representing the moment with veracity.
