IRIS VAN HERPEN, among the most highly celebrated and avant-garde fashion designers of our time, presented her haute couture collection ‘Earthrise’ during the Paris Haute Couture Week on 5 July, 2021. Fascinated by humankind’s ancient dream of flying, the designer collaborated with World Champion in skydiving, Domitille Kiger. We present you the video, for which Olivier SCHAWALDER c/o les ARTISTS by Josef Stockinger took care of hairstyling, here on GoSee.

It was directed by Masha Vasyukova, and the DOP was Simon Plunket, who expressed how much he was impressed by the work of the designer : “From the outset, this was going to be an incredibly special project – the sky really was not the limit. ‘Earthrise’ takes place somewhere between two worlds, the usual rules of physics do not exist, and of course, we needed to achieve all effects on a very tight budget without any VFX… Iris’ clothing is so beautifully and meticulously made that wires or green screen would never be an option. Everything you see is on camera, and it took a lot of shots to try and create a sense of weightlessness and the otherworld. This was all helmed by the mind-blowingly talented and determined @mashavasyukova, who spent weeks and months pushing for us to shoot in more extreme environments to achieve this surreal piece. Her vision has really transformed this film into the otherworld… Shooting this almost felt like we were on a space mission of our own. All of the equipment had to be loaded onto a Ski Bubble then carried by hand across an extremely narrow ridge up to the top of a 2,500-meter peak. Working at these altitudes had unforeseen effects on the crew which made shooting very challenging. The idea was to capture eighteen looks in a twelve-hour day of shooting, and the only way we could have any hope of achieving it, was to go with multiple teams and crews…” (@simonplunketdop).

IRIS VAN HERPEN : “With our planet positioned at the forefront of the global agenda more than ever before, ‘Earthrise’ explores the splendor of this blue body we call home by circling towards an amalgamated awareness in order to maintain the grandeur of the turning sphere we are traversing the heavens on. In parallel to Van Herpen’s drive towards an interconnected approach to fashion, the collection of nineteen looks narrates the circular processes that usher in change in our sentient world by weaving a symbiotic thread between artisanal tailoring and organic craftsmanship, derived from the perception of our world as one living and breathing organism (...).” More is available via YouTube.
