The collaboration between Jean Paul Gaultier and the Shayne Oliver Group showcases the ingenuity and irreverence of the New York-based fashion house when it comes to reinventing the fierce femininity, attitude, and glamorous fashion that the French fashion house is known for.
The capsule collection by 'Hood By Air' founder Shayne Oliver reinterprets the Gaultier aesthetic, infusing it with the trendy street style vibe for which the Berlin-based designer Shayne Oliver is famous for. The looks featured here were photographed by Kuba Ryniewicz and Moritz Freudenberg, with hair by Kosuke IKEUCHI c/o SHOTVIEW A.M.
“I didn't want the collection to be about swag-ifying something high brow. It felt more organic for me to critique the things I find important in the modern wardrobe, and amplify that,” guest designer Shayne Oliver tells BoF. The garments, which drop the same night as the Met Gala, embody “utilitarianism, femininity, power, and play,” he explains.
While Jean Paul Gaultier stopped producing ready-to-wear in 2014, and the designer’s final haute couture collection was released in 2020, his guest designer program has become a true sensation: Simone Rocha, Julien Dossena of Rabanne, and Glenn Martens of Diesel have designed haute couture, while KNWLS has created prêt-à-porter.
