Matthew JOSEPH c/o UPFRONT accompanied members of BIKELIFE and got to know a unique community, for whom acceptance, belonging, camaraderie, and the daily grind are of the greatest importance.
Matthew : “This project comprises still images and interviews from six members of the cycling subculture community, known as BikeLife. Shot across New York and Baltimore, I wanted to dive beneath the surface of this apparent anti-social movement to tell the real stories of those on the front line. What is revealed is a lifestyle of acceptance, belonging, camaraderie and hard graft. Up-skilling themselves to a point of providing a way out and forward from their starting point in life; careers are being formed.
The public doesn’t seem to have much time for BikeLife – and, perhaps, there are many instances and incidents to explain why. However, beneath the pack-mentality front, the tricks, stunts and Insta-egos, these are people from every walk of life simply finding their own tribe and – perhaps, a potential career path. If nothing else, BikeLife provides a place to socialize and belong, utilizing the ultimate class-leveling freedom of two wheels.
Like the surf and skate cultures of decades gone by, BikeLife is in need of its own cult heroes to rise to a level of commercial success, cementing its acceptance among broader society. I am left inspired by my experience, with a smile on my face and my love of cycling deepened… wondering whether Noel, Emmanuel, Worm, Curly, Daetwon or Maine could be just that?”
