JAN VON HOLLEBEN presents his book ‘Rooms for Dessert’ on GoSee - meet the kids photographer at PARIS PHOTO and visit the Polycopies boat for a book signing and talk

In their new book, children's book authors Jan von Holleben and Monte Packham invites us to embark on a delicious adventure full of giant gummy bears, mountains of jelly and cream, a popcorn ocean, and more.

‘Rooms for Dessert’, published by Steidl, follows five children on a hunt for sweets in a grand palace, who end up discovering all sorts of secrets and surprises. In fantastic collages, Jan von Holleben has creatively combined photographs taken by him in the baroque Heidecksburg Palace in Thuringia with a variety of real sweets.

Extravagant arrangements and candy collages depicted in wall-mounted photographs engage in dialogue with a baroque dining table centrally positioned and decked with original silverware from the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. Monte Packham tells the story through playful, humorous verses that spark children’s curiosity and reflect the palace's opulence. Together, the close interplay of image and text crafts a modern fairy tale.

The message of the book? With a little imagination, anyone can magically transform reality into a world of fantasy: the most colorful things in life are not only those we see can with our eyes.

This is his fourth book with Monte Packham and their second children’s storybook together (following ‘The Blueberry Machine’, published by Little Steidl). Here on GoSee, we provide an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the photographer’s kitchen and the Steidl printing house.


Meet Jan von Holleben in person at the upcoming Paris Photo exhibition, who reveals on GoSee what he has in store for us there.

Jan: “As a newly minted Parisian, I’m really looking forward to all the curious visitors, artists, and photographers! My schedule at Paris Photo is bursting at the seams this year: there will be a curated book wall at Tipi, a pop-up stand with Les Grandes Personnes, I’ll be signing books, hosting two round tables (one even in French – wow!), and sipping a delicious aperitif with you on Saturday on the deck of the Polycopies boat on the river Seine. I would be thrilled if you could join us!

The Polycopies boat on the Seine is where you’re most likely to find me during Paris Photo. And I have quite a few surprises up my sleeve! However, if I’m not bouncing around on deck, you can catch me across the Seine in the Grand Palais at the main fair. As I said, the program is chock full – so please join us and support our mission for the visual education of children.
