After working seven years as a renowned model, Liya Kebede didn’t have a plan of founding a fashion label. Until she saw a way to create modern designs using traditional techniques while creating jobs in her home country at the same time. As a dedicated change maker, she didn’t hesitate for a moment.
“lemlem is a label of love.” Liya Kebede
Fourteen years later, lemlem is busy enriching our lives with a collection of signature lemlem pieces – clothing marked by casual elegance which is pleasant to wear for any occasion. Her kaftans, dresses, swimwear and other feather-light essentials are made from sustainable materials such as recycled polyester, Tencel cellulosic fibers and organic linen, which feel wonderfully soft on the skin.
Today, as in the beginning, Liya Kebede’s is driven by the motivation to rethink fashion and enable positive change. H&M spoke with the ‘happenstance entrepreneur’ about hope and gentleness – and about who is currently changing the world.
