‘Floating World’ – meditative photographs inspired by Japanese color woodcuts by Christian SCHMIDT c/o CLAUDIA BITZER

‘Floating World’ – is the name Christian Schmidt has given his series of photos which are significantly inspired by Japanese color woodcuts. This art form, referred to as Ukiyo-e, was extremely popular in Japan in the time between the 17th and 19th centuries. It depicts the transience of the world and has influenced numerous Western artists through its bold color schemes and crisp lines. ‘Floating World’ is Christian’s attempt to transfer elements of this traditional Japanese art form to photography.
