Robert Westrich : ‘Back in Time for the Future’ tracing 100 years of RECARO Holding’s corporate history
RECARO’s corporate history of over one hundred years begins with the Stuttgart Reutter & Co factory. Today the company headquarters are going back to their roots and returning to Stuttgart once more.
To celebrate this and in keeping with the slogan ‘Back in Time for the Future’ Robert WESTRICH embarked on an exciting journey back in time, tracing over 100 years of corporate history for RECARO Holding.
A lot of original prints in the company’s photo archive had been waiting for up to seventy or more years to be rediscovered, returned to where they were originally created and reunited with the present.
The cars and transportation specialist photographer comments, ‘The archival imagery was elaborately edited back into the original locations. The client placed great value on the precise transition between the past and the present.’ The result is a series of detailed, fascinating images depicting RECARO Holding’s corporate history.
Background: In 1906 Wilhelm Reutter establishes "Stuttgarter Carosserie- u. Radfabrik" (Stuttgart Body and Wheel Factory). Once his brother Albert joins the business, the company is renamed "Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co." (Stuttgart Body Factory Reutter & Co.). It quickly becomes an important force in the young automotive industry. Reutter enjoys success with the "Reform-Karosserie", a predecessor of today's convertible, which is patented in 1909.
In 1931 its contact with the Porsche engineering office sets things in motion for the company's further evolution: following joint developments for predecessor models, Reutter builds pre-production prototypes for the "Volkswagen" (beetle). 1950 sees another successful product: the first Porsche 356 in German production. By the end of 1963 the body factory has produced the majority of the total 78,000 Porsche 356 models.
