California, and particularly Southern California, is always a great choice when it comes to spectacular transportation photography. Like this time for the TOYOTA Grand Highlander, which photographer JEFF LUDES had the pleasure of staging for the agency Saatchi & Saatchi in various locations.
“With the weather getting colder, it was high time for a trip to sunny Southern California. And for code-red reasons, we decided to render the vehicle exterior in CGI.” Jeff Ludes.
For this purpose, Jeff’s team simply brought a stand-in car to the set – to save as much time as possible in post.
California just wouldn’t be California if the most magnificent weather didn’t unexpectedly make the entire team break out in a sweat – which is precisely what happened on this long and productive day in the hills. No wonder the beach, our next location, was such a welcome break!
“The beach campfire shot was already done at three in the afternoon. An exceptionally high tide the night before had swept away half the beach so that what still remained would be under water by sunset. We added a few strobes and got a great day-for-night look. But still plenty of work to do, even while enjoying the breeze. Finally, the studio was one place that was completely safe from curious passers-by, so we brought in the prototype,” Jeff Ludes continues. “The interiors were shot in a day in the studio. The family is a real family (and I think it shows), except for the very patient grandpa!”
Jeff’s experienced team skillfully mimicked the lighting from the location shoot in the studio, enabling Jeff to photograph the talent inside the actual car. Polishing everything up a bit in post made for a prefect result.
