Markus Mueller : for LAND ROVER and Young & Rubicam to the shoot in the Alps – silver at the 2013 EPICA AWARDS, new breakthrough pictures for the JOHN PLAYER special campaign ‘Just Free’ and further photographs for HDI Insurance

A shoot for Land Rover and the agency Young & Rubicam took Markus Mueller to the Swiss Alps. To demonstrate the off-road capability of the Land Rover models, the team faced the forces of nature.

In order to create the three new pictures, Markus Mueller not only had to face mountain peaks, bitter cold and dense fog, but also had to contend with three crazy Chihuahuas. The fact that the crew still had a lot of fun is clearly visible in the pictures. RECOM put the finishing touches to the images – we assume they did so in heated rooms. The production was courtesy of VISUALEYES ARTISTS.

The effort was worth it. The campaign received amazing feedback, was introduced in the previous issue of Lürzer’s Archive and won silver at the ‘EPICA AWARDS 2013’.

Once he thawed, Markus Mueller went to the studio to produce his second round of the JOHN PLAYER special campaign ‘Just Free’. The agency was deepblue networks with art director Jan Johannesdotter. John Player Special advertise their cigarette range without additives with their ‘Just Free’ slogan. The two new print pictures depict people, who figuratively break out of their routine environment to leave their grey everyday world behind them.

The photographer also created new images for client HDI in Hamburg and Berlin, commissioned by deepblue networks. He created beautiful lighting in industrial sites, offices and shopping centres. Oliver Reichwald carried out the art direction and GoSee member CLAAS CROPP CREATIVE PRODUCTIONS was responsible for the production.

About MARKUS MUELLER
Like few other photographers Markus Mueller knows how to use visual means – depth in particular – to create places that invite discovery. Throughout his work he rejects the obvious and embraces the freely associative.

Markus Mueller's path to photography was preceded by a detour through the humanities. He began a degree program in history and political science in his hometown of Dresden, but while slogging through dreary texts he discovered his love of images, and decided to leave university and concentrate on photography instead. He first worked as a photographer’s assistant, and later enrolled at Berlin’s Lette Verein school, earning his diploma in 2003. Since then he has lived and worked in Germany’s capital, where his office is now based.

In addition to his art photography, Markus Mueller is known for his sophisticated work in advertising and is an internationally sought-after photographer for clients such as Adidas, Volkswagen, Land Rover, O2, Hornbach, Mercedes-Benz and Panasonic. Even in his commercial projects, Markus Mueller eschews the functional and instrumental and seeks to create timeless, enduring images. He has received numerous awards for his work, including a Clio Award, an Epica Award and a WPPED Cream Award as well as prizes from ADC Germany, ADC Europe, Cannes Lions and D&AD London.
