“‘You see more’ – that was probably the most beautiful compliment I have ever gotten. At the most beautiful place, at the most beautiful time. Back when I was a cameraman, I was on the small Caribbean island of Tobago for a TV production and had just filmed a report on an old Rastafarian. I was getting around in the world quite a lot for my job in general at that time.
Would I have ever thought I’d be seeing the world at nineteen just because I knew how to use a camera? I don’t think so. I started a fashion label back then with two buddies and someone needed to photograph our products. Our budget made it a pretty quick decision that we would have to do it ourselves. Only a few short years and a bit of vocational training, and I was filming for TV productions all over the world. Article after article. Like this one about the Rastafarian in Tobago.
‘You see more,’ the man said to me while we looked out over the ocean from a viewing platform after we had finished filming. We got into a conversation after the cameras were turned off, and I told him about my love for photography. This love for photography. That little moment, that little bit of light that is broken into a color spectrum cast onto the floor. A reflection that perfectly lights up the face of a beloved person. A single ray of sunlight that stages the old man sitting on a bench in the park as if he weren’t reading a paper somewhere in Cologne, but instead on a giant stage with a spotlight shining on him.
I look out over the ocean. That was most likely the most beautiful compliment for my photos anyone has ever made me. Three words that sum up everything photography has given me. I make visible what others oversee. And that day after day.” Norman Keutgen.
