For their new non-profit magazine PROJEKT, the two WE! shoot it photographers Michael Compensis & Thomas von Salomon were up against a challenge : They wanted to present the technology of the legendary BMW M10 engine in such detail that x-raying it was the only choice! But how do you x-ray a 100 kg engine block made of massive gray cast iron?
Well, thanks to lots of research and above all clever post production, the creative duo was up to even this task. The four-cylinder engine was introduced by BMW for the first time in 1961 in the BMW 1500, referred to as the new class. At the beginning of the 80s, it peaked as the basis for the 1400 PS, 1.5 l Formula 1 engine of the Brabham BMW and went on to become the basis for the four-cylinder engine of the first BMW M3, the most successful touring car of all times. To this day, the BMW M10 is one of the best four-cylinders ever built and has laid the foundation of BMW's uber-sporty image.
With the one-of-a-kind x-ray photos, the photographer duo grants a glimpse into the technical details of the engine. Front and side shots reveal the first details of the 1.5 liter single carburetor version. In the top view, photographer duo Michael Compensis & Thomas von Salomon delves deep into the engine. From the oil pan and oil pump, we slowly work are way down to the block with crankshaft and pistons, the cylinder head with the single camshaft and the eight valves to the cylinder valve cover. Haven't seen an engine like this before!
