‘PAKISTAN – Where the Mountains Cry’ is the retrospective of the photographic oeuvre of Sarah Caron, dedicated to the women and men of Pakistan … The book was published by EDITION LAMMERHUBER, and the exhibition is on display at the open-air Festival La Gacilly-Baden Photo

Once upon a time, there was a land born of strife and forged by blood, tears and the fear of the others. Its population was scarred for eternity and its citizens were doomed to repeat the same atrocities against one another. Today, this nation is still searching for peace…

The multiple award-winning French photographer Sarah Caron has spent a lot of time in Pakistan over the past decade, seeing and portraying the country in all its facets : from the dangerous regions where tribal lords rule to the haute couture catwalks in Karachi.

On 27 December, 2007, Benazir Bhutto, the country’s former prime minister, was assassinated in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. At that very same moment, Sarah Caron was sitting in a taxi and stuck in a traffic jam. She was on her way to an event with Bhutto and suddenly found herself in the middle of one of the most turbulent periods in the Islamic Republic’s history. A month earlier, she was commissioned by Time Magazine to hold an interview and a photo session with Bhutto, who was under house arrest at the time.

While often only the worst sides of Pakistan are shown, Sarah Caron presents the entire breadth and depth of diversity in this country which she has travelled extensively : from the bustling and lively megacities to the desert-like foothills of the Hindu Kush, with its winding roads where heavy trucks festooned with colorful garlands wear grooves into the surface. She visited forgotten ethnic groups who seem to live in another time, such as the last of the Kalash from the Chitral valley, who are sometimes mistakenly considered the descendants of Alexander the Great, … or the Mohana community, who live at Lake Manchar in the Indus valley where they preserve their traditions.

SARAH CARON is an award-winning French photographer who has traveled around the globe on commission for international magazines over the past 25 years. Sarah has always taken a very personal and unique approach to her photography. She delves deep into people’s lives and takes a lot of time to convey their circumstances.

With her first works, created in India, she garnered attention. The photos of widows who live in exile in the northern part of the country were shown in 1999 at Festival Visa pour l’Image. Caron, who was actually destined to become a ballet dancer, then fully embraced photography and reportage. In her photos, always marked by dignity and never dabbling in sensationalism, she explores the most important issues: the ones no one seems to talk about.

In 2019, Sarah Caron was awarded the Pulitzer ‘Grant for Editorial Crisis Reporting’. Her works were exhibited in New York, Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, in Spain, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Cuba, Cambodia, Japan, Vietnam and Pakistan, and were purchased by the Fond National d‘Art Contemporain Paris and the Museum for History and Immigration Paris. She has also published six books to date.

Exhibition – The photographs of the book are on display in the exhibition ‘The Land of the Pure’ as part of Europe’s largest open-air photo festival, the Festival La Gacilly-Baden Photo, from 15 June through 15 October, 2023, in Baden near Vienna.
