'Shaded Memories'. The Shadow over Cambodia. photographs by Ann-Christine Woehrl on the darkest moments in the history of Cambodia as a photo book at Edition Lammerhuber
During the four years of dictatorship of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge nearly two million people were killed. This is a quarter of the Cambodian population. In a very personal reflection on this genocide, Ann-Christine Woehrl’s photographs present fragments of the places that remind us of these atrocities: prison S-21, the Killing Fields, the UN Tribunal in Phnom Penh and Anlong Veng. German President Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote the preface. The texts were created in a collaboration of Ann-Christine Woehrl with Rithy Panh, Anne-Laure Porée and Stéphanie Benzaquen-Gautier: The photo as an instrument during the times of the Khmer Rouge and as a remnant of the genocide today.
Ann-Christine Woehrl travelled to Cambodia starting in 2013, to visit the S-21 prison, which is today the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, in Phnom Penh. At the time a place of terror and violence, the atrocities are still felt in the rooms and are reflected in the faces of the prisoners. Women, men and children were portrayed during their imprisonment, and the portraits now hang on the walls of the prison. On her first visit, the photographer followed the gazes of the portrayed prisoners through the former prison cells, the interrogatioon rooms, the documentation center, and through the archive. These experiences made Ann-Christine Woehrl feel the need to deal with the dark history of Cambodia at the time of the Communist Pol Pot regime – in the form of very personal reflection and research. From 2015-2016, Ann-Christine Woehrl realized and finalized her project. Very important to her work was her meeting with Cambodian writer and film director Rithy Panh as well as writer and activist Loung Ung and reading their respective autobiographical books "Extinction" and "First They Killed My Father".
Ann-Christine Woehrl was born in 1975. She works as a freelance photographer, and her work focuses on social topics, women’s rights and religious issues in Latin America, Africa and South Asia. Her two last projects Witches in Exile and IN/VISIBLE (Edition Lammerhuber, 2014) were published worldwide, awarded multiple international prizes and shown in exhibitions and at photo festivals. She has received awards including the Silver Cube in 2015 for IN/VISIBLE at the Art Directors Club New York Annual Awards.
STÉPHANIE BENZAQUEN-GAUTIER is an associate researcher at the Centre for Historical Culture, Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
VISOTH CHHAY took over in 2014 as director of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh.
CHRISTINE KRON, Shas studied ethnology, history and African history. In 2011 she became director of the Museum Fünf Kontinente in Munich.
RITHY PANH is the director of the film S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine and author of the book Auslöschung (Elimination, not avail. in English). His film Rice People was nominated for an Oscar. Panh is co-producer of Angelina Jolie’s film First They Killed My Father.
ANNE-LAURE PORÉE is a journalist. In her PhD thesis in anthropology she researches prison S-21.
