The new book by Patrick Remy is dedicated to erotic photography. It is not about satisfaction but desire he tells us. For 'Desire: New Erotic Photography', he compiled works by up-and-coming photographers who walk the thin line between art and mainstream including David Bellemere, Massimo Leardini, Jonathan Leder, Henrik Purienne, Esther Teichmann, and the fantastic Hester Scheurwater, whom we met at the NoFoundPhotoFair in Paris. The illustrated book wishes to stage the nude body as an esthetic element of artistic nude photography. One central question is also, which photos are considered erotic in the digital age and the flood of pornography on the Internet.
Compiled by Paris resident author and publisher Patrick Remy, a specialist in the area of contemporary fashion and photography. Patrick started writing about photography in 1992. He has contributed to many magazines including Vogue Paris, Mixte, Paradis, l'Œil, Journal des Arts, Beaux-Arts, L'Officiel, Jalouse, Numéro, and AD. From 2008-2014, he taught at ECAL (Lausanne, Switzerland). And in 1999, the PATRICK REMY STUDIO was founded.
An author of several books, he published the book series Fashion Images de Mode, the Fashion-Photography Annual, and The Art of Fashion Photography (Prestel). He has also published a number of photographers' monographies including that of Guido Mocafico, Bettina Rheims, Daido Moriyama, Massimo Vitalli, Jonas Mekas, Valérie Belin or Koto Bolofo as well as books for luxury brands. His expertise in this sector make him a consultant in high demand by agencies and brands. He consults customers such as Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, Chanel perfumes, Gucci Group, YSL or Kenzo Cosmetics. We asked Patrick about his book...
What were your criteria for choosing the photographers? When I started, I was searching for very contemporary nude photography... only to find out that nude photography never really changed since the beginning...
What are the ingredients for a good erotic photograph? The desire of the model! Photography is almost always a question of 'Desire'... I start my book with a quotation of William Ewing : 'All photographs are, at some level, about love, and all photographs are triggered, to varying degrees, by desire. These human emotions may be well disguised, or expressed indirectly, but they are always there: The person behind the camera wishes to seize and possess either a moment, a mood, an object, a body, a place.'
What is more exciting: dressed like in work for Numéro, L'Officiel, Jalouse, ... or nude like in the illustrated book? Dressed like in all these fashion magazines ... and to find the time and opportunity to undress.
Will the photos in the book be exhibited on a larger scale, is an exhibition planned? No, 'Desire' will be just a book... because it is intimate with the format... but I am working on an exhibition with the Art of Fashion... so if any museum is interested they can contact me.
What has changed in how we deal with eroticism today? Are we puritans these days? Yes of course, because pornography is everywhere! Of course our times are puritan, but we are also very tired of flesh... Like in the porn industry... In this book, I focused on photographers who have a real vision of women... nude or not, it is in the end just a question of desire.
Who would you like to see someday in erotic poses? All the beautiful girls I see everyday in the streets! :)
What are your desires in photography? To discover new photographers, new visions of photography.
What would you say defines your job as curator, writer and art director? These jobs are more or less the same, my ideal in life is to be what we refer to in French as "Un passeur", not a smuggler, but someone who shows others what he has discovered, what he likes... through books, exhibitions, articles...
How can your photographer's heart be won? I always want to see something new that comes from deep in the heart rather than from the mind.
You also teach at the ECAL (Lausanne, Switzerland). Do your students love or 'fear' you? I stopped teaching at ECAL last year... and of course the students loved me! The challenge was to introduce them to photography, the past, present and future... it requires culture to be a good photographer... and the other challenge for them was to show me their unusual work. Big challenge!
Are there any new projects you are working on which you want to share with us? I am working on a Steve Hiett book, the best English fashion photographer for Prestel, which will be finished soon in fall 2015... Working on the new issue of the Art of Fashion Photography (I hope with an exhibition), a very big book about Bettina Rheims for Taschen Verlag, and a new collection of travel book photography for a big and famous brand... and the complete work of Guido Mocafico for Numéro for Steidl... and many others!
Who wants to learn more can do so in the introductory essay of 'Desire', where Patrick tries to find out which options photography has beyond the inflation of all types of pornography in the Net. We have visual insight for you on GoSee.
