STEFFEN JAHN presents his series ‘Driven by Dreams’ here on GoSee, created for the fine art classic car dealership Carola Daimler in Stuttgart. He tells us it was about bringing back a blast from the past.
“Owning and driving a classic car is not only about the machine itself and the thrilling engine sound, the gentle scent of leather upholstery, and the subtle touch of wood from the dashboard. Its like taking a trip down memory lane and immersing oneself in the world of international travel in turboprop planes, the smoky sound of jazz in a nightclub… not to mention the epic fox hunt on the estate of the late Lord Fiddlehasketchew.
The fascination with these exquisite automobiles comes not only from the cars themselves but just as much from the era in which they were built – a time they can take us back to when we drive them. ‘Driven by Dreams’ is about reliving these very emotions – and such moments from the past – again in our day and age.
We photographed the cars, parked door to door at the dealership in Stuttgart. To create high-quality images (shot with a Phase One XF IQ 4 150MP camera) that look like they were shot in the studio, we used segmented flash technology, which delivers stunning light quality even in the smallest parts of the car while preventing reflections from other vehicles.
To get psyched up for the project, we delved into the world of Dashiell Hammett, the Rat Pack, listened to Coleman Hawkins, and drank a Dirty Martini or two. The original images of the car were photographed with a Phase One XF IQ 4 150MP camera connected to Capture One and Profoto flashes. My partner in crime, Tom Stein, created the backgrounds with AI, and everything was finally combined with lots of love and meticulous care in Photoshop.”
